Germany brings together ten major post-war German artists who in the wake of WWII sought to redefine their inherited identity through their art practice.
They investigate, ridicule, blur, dissect or attack the beliefs and teachings they were left with, thus distancing themselves from their elders as they realize how much they carry with them, no matter where they escape to.
Still Germans but not the same, they try to reconcile national pride with individualism, reaching out for their heritage beyond the horror it bears. as if they were applying Heidegger’s under-erasure theory to their own identity. One can still read Germany under the erasure, yet that only is for lack of a better word, truer to their interiority.
